Great service! Very fast also! I had my Katana I brought back from Japan sharpened here to use as my new steak knife. First cut was a true test through a Wagyu tomahawk rack, sliced through like butter! Highly recommend! He can do it all!
QUINTON M.GOOGLE REVIEW
★★★★★
I have used the edge alchemist to sharpen my kitchen knives, which is a varied collection of Shun and other Japanese blades and good European blades. The results were wonderful. My Japanese knives are so sharp. It's a pleasure to use them again as they had lost their edge. Highly recommend this business as they were prompt, efficient, and a pleasure to deal with.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Knife sharpening FAQ

How much does knife sharpening cost?

We charge $12 per knife for standard sharpening across Brisbane, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast — that includes chef knives, Japanese knives, pairing knives and garden tools. Scissors and shears are $18 per pair, as both blades and the shear action need work. A $75 minimum callout applies, waived when you have 6 or more items sharpened. Repairs and reprofiling for damaged blades are quoted separately once we've seen the knife.

Do you really come to me?

Yes — we're a fully mobile knife sharpening service. We bring a professional wet belt sharpening system to your home, restaurant or business anywhere in Brisbane, the Gold Coast or the Sunshine Coast. Most knives are sharpened on the spot in just a few minutes.

How often should kitchen knives be sharpened?

For home cooks, a professional sharpen every 6–12 months keeps knives performing well. Knives in daily professional use need it far more often — every 1–3 months. If your knife is sliding off tomato skin instead of biting in, it's overdue.

Will sharpening wear my knives out?

Not the way we do it. Our slow wet belt process removes the minimum amount of steel needed to restore the edge — unlike aggressive dry grinding, which overheats the steel and eats blades. Done properly, sharpening extends a knife's life rather than shortening it.

Do you sharpen serrated knives?

No — we don't sharpen serrated knives. We sharpen chef and kitchen knives (including Japanese styles), pairing and specialty knives, scissors, kitchen shears, and garden tools such as secateurs.

Can I drop my knives off somewhere instead?

Yes — if you can't be home for a callout, you can book a drop-off at our Arana Hills workshop. Drop-offs are by online booking only, and you'll get the address with your booking confirmation. Knives must be wrapped in a tea towel and secured with a rubber band for safety (unwrapped knives can't be accepted). Leave them in the drop box with your name and number — once they're sharpened we take payment, and your payment confirmation text is your all-clear that they're ready to collect from the same spot. Sharpening from $12 per knife; thinning $60 per knife (sharpening included). You can also drop kitchen knives and scissors at The Woods Bottleshop in Mitchelton — wrap them and hand them to the team with a quick slip. Scissors are $18 per pair.

Do you sharpen axes, chipper blades and garden tools?

Yes. Alongside kitchen and chef knives, I take on axes, hatchets, wood chipper blades, garden tools, scissors and shears at the Arana Hills workshop. That includes heavier work like rust removal, restoration, reprofiling and chip repair. Because condition and grinding time vary so much on these, they're priced on the job rather than a flat rate — axes start from $50 and chipper blades from $45 per blade. Send through a photo or drop the item in and I'll confirm the price before starting any work.

What is knife thinning, and do I need it?

Over years of sharpening, the steel just behind the edge gradually gets thicker, so even a razor-sharp knife starts to wedge and stick in food instead of gliding through. Thinning grinds that steel back down to restore effortless cutting. It's a precision bench job done at our Arana Hills workshop as a drop-off service — $60 per knife, which includes a full sharpen so it comes back ready to use. If your knife feels sharp but still splits carrots instead of slicing them cleanly, it's probably due for a thin.

What areas do you service?
